John Williams

John is a partner at Prowse Chowne LLP and has been with the firm since graduation from law school in 1981.

His client base is primarily owner/operated businesses, self-employed individuals and professionals. These clients typically operate as sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. John is involved in all legal aspects of client businesses from their structure on formation, their ongoing legal requirements and their succession planning strategies. Many of the businesses John assisted to create are now in their second and third generation as clients of the firm.

Because of his long-term client relationships, John has developed a successful wills and estate practice. His experience allows him to advise clients and their families with their estate and related business planning needs. This experience carries over to assisting both individual and corporate executors in the probate of wills and estate administration.

A large component of John’s practice also includes acting for banks and other financial institutions as secured lenders. John provides these clients with timely and practical advice in general and the preparation of the necessary security documents required in each specific transaction. As part of a secured lending file, John is often also involved as counsel to the purchaser or vendor of a business or a commercial property.

John is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and was its North Alberta Section Co-ordinator for two years. John has also served in all executive positions, including as chair, for both the North Alberta Wills & Estates Section and the North Alberta Business Law Section.

John has been a member of The Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview since 2000 and serves as one

of its directors and its secretary. John has also been a member and director of the Kristie Charitable

Foundation since 1991. John is a past member and director of the Pastoral Institute of

Edmonton/Edmonton Counselling Centre, the County Clothes-Line Foundation and the Lucy

Baker School Society.
